ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has defended his silence on reports of the “genocide” of Uighur Muslims in China by stating that Islamabad discussed these matters with Beijing “behind closed doors.” He asked why the world was obsessed with Xinjiang while “ignoring what India was doing in Kashmir.” “It is much more relevant,” he said in an interview with Axios HBO.
The interviewer specifically asked why Khan talked so much about Islamophobia in the West while keeping silent about the state of Muslims in China’s Xinjiang. “China has been one of our best friends in the most difficult times. When we were really struggling, our economy was struggling, China came to our rescue. We respect their character and whatever problems we have, we speak behind closed doors, ”Khan said.
He called the West’s dismissal of Kashmiris and their adoption of the Uyghur cause as “hypocrisy.” “China had informed us that the abuse of Uighurs reported in the media was exaggerated,” Khan added.
His comments on China, Xinjiang, the treatment of Uighur Muslims, J&K and India have sparked a debate on Indian and Pakistani social media, with many netizens criticizing his comments. Some called the comments “total moral cowardice.”
On Pakistan’s expanding nuclear program, Khan said: “I am completely against nuclear weapons. I have always been. The moment there is a settlement in Kashmir, the two neighbors will live as civilized people. We will not need nuclear deterrents. ”
Khan was also criticized for his comments about women. She said that “temptation” plays a role in violence against women in Pakistan. “If a woman is wearing very little clothing, it will have an impact on men, unless they are robots,” he said. The interviewer noted that Khan’s statement seemed hypocritical, as he had spent decades as a “playboy” and was often photographed with scantily-clad women. “This is not about me,” Khan replied. “It’s about my society. My priority is how my society behaves … so when I see sex crimes skyrocket, we sit down and discuss how to tackle them. It is having an impact on my society. ”
