Netflix removes LGBTQ label on Jeffrey Dahmer show amid backlash

Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” isn’t out of the woods yet. The streaming platform, which was criticized for the “cruel” series by the family of one of Dahmer’s victims, has come under fire for initially categorizing it as an LGBTQ show.

“If I need to stay in my lane tell me absolutely, but does anyone else think @netflix is pretty big on including Dahmer in #LGBTQ, especially when the True Crime tag would have worked?” tweeted writer Frances Danger on Wednesday, when the series premiered.

Other users noted how Netflix labeled the series as part of its LGBTQ content. For reference, other series under the streamer’s LGBTQ tag include “Heartstopper,” “Sex Education,” and “AJ the Queen.”

“Nah, Netflix was wrong to portray dahmer as LGBTQ.” said another Twitter user.

“Hey @netflix, I implore you to reconsider having Dahmer LGBTQ-tagged, especially as one of your tags right when you open the app.” said @Sinuzaki.

On Tik Tokone user said it’s “technically true” to label the series “LGBTQ” given that Dahmer was gay, “but this is not the representation we’re looking for.”

Upon its release, the series was also listed in the platform’s “sinister”, “psychological”, “horror”, “old crime” and “dark” categories.

As of Tuesday, Netflix listed the series under “Crime TV Shows” and “Social Drama.” However, it’s unclear when exactly Netflix removed the “LGBTQ” label.

“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” starring Evan Peters as the serial killer, revisits the 1970s and early 1990s when Dahmer killed 17 people, most of whom were people of color.

Even before its premiere, the new Netflix series drew criticism for its trailer.

“I don’t know about some of you, but I don’t think the murders of black and gay men should be used for entertainment or profit.” a Twitter user said.

“Do serial killers really need that much screen time?” Said another Twitter user.

Just one day after “Monster” debuted, Eric Perry tweeted that the series is causing his family to relive the nightmare of Errol Lindsey’s murder and the trauma his sister Rita Isbell faced.

“I don’t tell anyone what to watch, I know the true crime media is huge, but if you’re really curious about the victims, my family (the Isbells) are mad at this show,” he said. he tweeted last Thursday.

Perry retweeted a video that appeared to compare a scene from the Netflix series to real-life court footage of Rita Isbell, Lindsey’s sister, attacking Dahmer. In the scene, actor DaShawn Barnes plays Isbell and runs towards Peters’ Dahmer before being stopped by theater security.

“It’s re-traumatizing over and over again, and for what?” Perry said in her first post, “How many movies/shows/documentaries do we need?”
