#Roommates, the ongoing drama surrounding Dave Chappelle and his controversial Netflix special continues, and following his previous endorsement of Chappelle, Netflix’s Co-CEO has doubled down with even more. In a new statement, Ted Sarandos made it clear that not only does Netflix strongly endorse Dave Chappelle, but the company fully supports a person’s right to watch what they choose.
@Variety reports, Ted Sarandos, the Co-CEO of Netflix sent another long memo to staff members regarding Dave Chappelle and his latest stand-up special ‘The Closer’, and if critics assumed he would back down following news of a reported strike by transgender employees, they are definitely wrong. In the memo, Sarandos stated: “We know that several of you have been angered, disappointed and hurt by our decision to put the latest Dave Chappelle special on Netflix … Adults can watch violence, assault and abuse, or enjoy a shocking stand-up comedy “. – without causing them to harm others. “
He continued with the discussion and comparison on other controversial Netflix titles:
“With ‘The Closer,’ we understand that the concern is not about content that is offensive to some, but about titles that could increase the harm in the real world (such as further marginalizing already marginalized groups, hatred, violence, etc.). Last year, we heard similar concerns about “365 days” and violence against women. While some employees disagree, we strongly believe that on-screen content does not directly translate to real-world harm. The strongest evidence to support this is that violence on screens has grown enormously in the last thirty years, especially with self-made shooting games, and yet violent crime has declined significantly in many countries. “
As we previously reported, after Netflix publicly stated that it had no plans to remove Dave Chappelle’s ‘The Closer,’ news spread that the company’s transgender employees had planned to go on strike on October 20.
In response to the growing backlash, Chappelle recently said “if this is how it gets canceled, I love it.”
