We already know what Mike Piazza’s policies are, as the Hall of Fame recipient appeared at a rally for Donald Trump. Last october. We can try to forget about that and just appreciate the greatness of his career, but Piazza insists to continue defending the worst candidates running for office.
On Tuesday, a video of Piazza appeared on the Twitter account of California gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder, the man most likely to have ruled the Golden State (on the ground). if the impeachment of current Governor Gavin Newsom had been successful, and that, like Trump, he has not threatened to respect the election results. Fortunately, it did not.
The whole thing is embarrassing. It begins with Piazza introducing himself, the video hitchhiking, and then Piazza resuming his presentation. Nobody thought to watch the video and edit that hiccup before posting it online?
Then there’s Piazza vowing to return to Dodger Stadium if Elder becomes governor, to “thank all the Dodgers fans who voted for him.” That would be a fairly short visit, since it’s not like Los Angeles is the hotbed of memory fever. Perhaps Piazza would have more luck down the road in Orange County in an Angels game?
Piazza’s big message is that Elder “wants to bring back the California dream” because people have been moving out of state. While California’s population has grown more slowly than in other parts of the country, it still increased by 6 percent between the 2010 census and 2020. It’s just that the proportion of the white population is declining, to 35 percent. as Latinos have become largest ethnic group in the state.
The wrinkle here, the “proof” that it’s not about calming nervous whites like Piazza, is that Elder is black. As in, “the black face of white supremacy,” as Erika D. Smith of the Los Angeles Times wrote last month. There is a niche within the right wing that is available for such a win-win relationship, at least for those cowardly enough to get hold of it. From Candace Owens to Tim Scott to Kanye West, you’ve seen this game long enough to know the game Elder is playing – he’s taken it so far, and there’s a ton of trouble on the other side with talk and television. panel appearances, saying things like descendants of enslavers should receive “lost property” reparations. At the very least, it brings a bunch of Trump nonsense to the arena, like having denied allegations of sexual harassment because the victim was not attractive enough. And it is a idiot about COVID-19, the most urgent problem facing anyone, anywhere, and especially in California right now.
Piazza’s endorsement, just days after the unifying and heartfelt memories of his big home run for the Mets after 9/11, only serves to further alienate the people who cheered him on throughout his career, at the same time He doubles down on grim politics to prove he wasn’t. Not only am I captivated by Trump’s cult of personality, but it really sucks so bad.
