Former UFC, Strikeforce and Bellator fighter Josh Thompson has revealed the only two welterweights on the planet that he believes have a shot at defeating UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.
His picks may come as a surprise to MMA fans, as none of Thompson’s picks are currently signed with the UFC.
Kamaru Usman has already beaten many of the UFC’s top-ranked 170-pound fighters, with Colby Covington, Leon Edwards, Gilbert Burns and Jorge Masvidal all falling short against ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’.
Josh Thompson chose two fighters in Bellator MMA’s welterweight division that he believes have the highest chance of defeating Usman.
In an interview with RT Sport MMA, Thompson chose Bellator welterweight champion Yaroslav Amosov as Usman’s toughest test across the board.
He added that Logan Storley would be an equally difficult matchup for the UFC champion. Thompson had this to say about Kamaru Usman’s dominance:
“I think Yaroslav Amosov would probably be his toughest test. He fights at Bellator, he’s the champion at Bellator after beating Douglas Lima. I also think his toughest test would be someone like Logan Storley, who is a multiple-time state champion fighter. as well as All American and one of the best fighters in the game. “
Thompson on whether Colby Covington can defeat Kamaru Usman in their upcoming rematch
Kamaru Usman is scheduled for a rematch with Colby Covington in the fall of 2021. Thompson believes the second fight will be another victory for the champion, and he believes that Usman will emerge victorious more easily than the first fight.
“I don’t think Colby has improved since the first time they fought. I think Usman has shown that he has improved a lot since the first time they fought … I don’t think the second fight is going to be competitive like the first at all.”
However, Thompson said that Covington has a slim chance of snatching a win from Kamaru Usman, but to do so, he must use his fighting, a part of his game that was not shown at all in the first fight.
“Colby, if he gets a chance, he’s going to have to fight Usman a lot and then get him on his feet to try and get over him. But it won’t do much to the ground. He’ll take him down and Usman will.” work to get up. “
