Heredia potentially put his name on the hat for one of the great youth contests at the end of the season by maintaining his undefeated record at the Dubai Duty Free Full Of Surprises British EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes in Newbury.
The Richard Hannon-trained Dark Angel filly had left the mark with minimal fuss at Windsor 20 days ago, but faced three other previous winners here, including Charlie Appleby’s favorite Silk Romance, 4-9, who looked smart. when he won at Newmarket.
The last of the four was placed by Sean Levey, he showed a clever turn of foot inside the last furlong to beat the market leader for a comfortable collar.
“She is a lovely filly, a home calf from Andrew Stones (St Albans Bloodstock) and I have to say (pre-trainer) Malcolm Bastard has done an incredible job,” said Hannon.
“She came to see me in June and she’s been really sweet ever since. We thought about her a bit when she went to Windsor and won there.
“I would say it was a smart race, it seemed like he enjoyed all seven stadiums, but where we are going, I don’t know.
“There are a lot of options, but I didn’t want to put her on anything in case she finished sixth at Windsor and then I would look like a fool. If we need to supplement something, we can do it now, since she paid for it.
“We’ll all have a chat, but I’d love to run it again looking for a black guy.”
Ralph Beckett introduced a well-bred newcomer to win the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes.
The dogs were barking for Hannon’s Witch Hunter, who was ejected from the 7-4 favorite and in a prime position at all times.
Deodar had been slightly outclassed at first, but he got the hang of it in the middle of Rob Hornby and propelled himself home enough on the railing to help him out, beating the favorite by a neck, although there wasn’t much in the top five at home.
“He just got together in the last three weeks, it took him a long time to figure out what was required, but he suddenly realized it,” said Beckett, of Bated Breath’s son, owned by Juddmonte.
“In his last job he put it between his ears.
“I don’t know what we’re going to do with him now, Richard liked his so I’d say it was a good effort and we’ll have to decide what to do.
“He’s off of a Selkirk mare, so he shouldn’t have a problem going further. I’d say we’re going to break up with him now.”
