Indian boxing queen Mary Kom will aim to take another step towards her second Olympic medal when she faces Colombian Ingrit Lorena Valencia Victoria in the round of 16 in the 51kg weight class at the Olympics. Tokyo 2021 on Thursday, July 29.
2018 Commonwealth Games silver medalist Satish Kumar is also scheduled for the same day. The super heavyweight boxer faces Jamaican Ricardo Brown for a place in the quarterfinals of the +91 kg category.
London Olympic bronze medalist Mary Kom began her campaign on Monday with a landslide 4-1 victory over Dominican Miguelina Hernández García. The 38-year-old got off to a slow start and won the first couple of rounds by split decisions before going all-out in the final round.
Now it is a step forward in the challenge of the six-time world champion. He faces Ingrit Lorena Valencia Victoria, 32, who has a bronze medal from the Rio Olympics. Valencia Victoria also won the gold medal at the 2019 Pan American Games. The Colombian will begin her career at the Tokyo Olympics after receiving a pass in the first round.
Having won her first round, Mary Kom will look to pick up the momentum and get a win over Valencia Victoria, although it could be a tough battle.
Satish Kumar, meanwhile, made history last year as the first Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympics in the super heavyweight category. He will face Ricardo Brown, the first boxer to represent Jamaica in the Olympics since the Atlanta Games in 1996.
Brown qualified for the Games after claiming bronze at the 2019 Pan Am Games. He will hope to impress the experienced Satish Kumar, who has bronze medals from the Asian Games and Asian Championships on his resume.
