2022 Volkswagen Atlas review, prices and specs

Overview

In many ways, the anonymous 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is the reason big, boxy SUVs get a bad rap, but it’s also a solid alternative to a minivan. With a spacious cargo area and three-row seats that seat adults comfortably on the way back, the Atlas is better for family hauling than many other midsize vehicles. Vw It also accommodates popular driver aids and desirable standard equipment, especially mid-line models, which enhance its value proposition. Power comes from a standard four-turbo engine or a robust V-6; Both are offered with front or four wheel drive. While the sizable SUV is unattractive to drive, its road manners are reassuring. Unfortunately, its uninspired interior aesthetics and rough ride on broken surfaces keep it from looking or feeling as refined as its rivals. Still, the Atlas 2022 stands out for being an XL size.

What’s new for 2022?

Volkswagen revisits the Atlas 2022 lineup by eliminating the entry-level S model and making the SE model the new entry point. While this contributes to a higher starting price than the previous model year, the Atlas SE actually sees a price decrease and comes with desirable standard features such as a cluster of digital gauges. Along with the Technology package, the SE now adds USB-C ports in the third row. A 20-inch wheel package is also recently available. Along with the optional V-6, the SE with the Tech Package now comes standard with a trailer hitch. Additionally, all SEL models now have standard all-wheel drive and 20-inch wheels. All SEL Premium trim levels feature the R-Line aesthetic, which includes 21-inch wheels. The new R-Line Black appearance package gives the midsize model a more sinister look.

Prices and which one to buy

We recommend the V-6-powered SE with the Technology Package, which together bring the price to just over $ 40,000. Those who want 4Motion all-wheel drive can add it for $ 1900. Our example includes a wide range of contemporary features including an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, adaptive cruise control, three-zone climate control, and remote start. To that we would add the captain’s chairs in the second row.

    Engine, transmission and performance

The Atlas comes with one of two engines: a 235-hp four-cylinder or a 276-hp V-6. Both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front or four-wheel drive. The V-6 feels and sounds refined and does not transmit a shudder to the cabin. Although the last four cylinder other V-6 The models we tested had normal acceleration, on the highway they rarely felt underpowered. While it’s not as fun to drive as Mazda cx-9, the Atlas responds obediently to steering wheel movements and never feels awkward. It is composed on the highway and agile in the city. The ride is smooth and all but the toughest bumps are absorbed.

Fuel economy and MPG in the real world

The Atlas fuel economy ratings are not groundbreaking for this class of big-box family haulers, but its real-world performance is not far behind the segment’s fuel pumps. The four-cylinder model is the most efficient with the front-wheel drive variant scoring 21 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The thirstiest V-6 model is rated at 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway with front-wheel drive and 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway with all-wheel drive. We ran both variants on our 75 mph real-world route, which is part of our extensive testing regimenand the Atlas V-6 returned 24 miles per gallon; the four-cylinder model delivers 27 mpg. Interior, comfort and cargo

Family-friendly interior space, an easy-to-control layout, and an overabundance of cup holders make the Atlas a practical choice, even among other highly practical rivals. Plus, a third row of seats that can comfortably accommodate full-size adults is a definite win. The interior design of the Atlas is simple and utilitarian, perfect for families, but less so for the style connoisseur. The cabin should accommodate just about anything a suburban family can throw at it, and there are plenty of carefully placed storage nooks for storing small items. In our luggage tests, the Atlas impressed us by placing four carry-on bags behind the third row and 38 behind the first, just like the huge honda rider.

    Infotainment and connectivity

Whichever model you choose, the Atlas comes well connected and ready to entertain. The touchscreen interface is intuitive and just as responsive as your average smartphone. The SE has a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, a six-speaker sound system, a Wi-Fi access point, and two USB ports. Starting with SE models with the Technology Package, the touchscreen grows to 8.0 inches, the rear seats share three USB ports, SiriusXM 360L Satellite Radio (subscription required) joins the party, and there’s a wireless charging pad for phones.

    Driver assistance and safety features

The Atlas comes with a number of standard and optional options. driver assistance technology. For more information on the Atlas crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Road Safety (IIHS) websites. Key security features include:

    • Standard forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
    • Standard blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert
    • Adaptive cruise control available with stop-and-go technology

      Warranty and maintenance coverage

Volkswagen offers an above-average limited warranty, but its powertrain coverage is inferior to that of most competitors. VW sweetens the deal with free scheduled maintenance that’s similar to what Toyota offers.

      • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      • Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
      • Complimentary maintenance is covered for two years or 20,000 miles
